Board the bus, coach or train

As an incentive, the University supports certain schemes to encourage staff to travel more sustainably in and around the city and to lower traffic congestion. So it makes good environmental and financial sense to get on board and make good use of them.

Please take the time to find out about these services and encourage your colleagues to do the same when planning to travel for work.

Pool bus passes

If you work for the University, your department may have some pool bus passes set aside for you to use. Several departments already hold them behind Receptions in their buildings.

Ask your Departmental Administrator if your department has a pool bus pass - it will save you the trouble of completing a bus expense claim for a small amount.

If you are a Departmental Administrator and would like to know how to acquire and manage pool bus passes please email

Science Transit Shuttle

The Science Transit shuttle provides quick and convenient travel between the Science Area and Harwell Campus, Old Road Campus, the John Radcliffe Hospital and Wytham. The Science Shuttle is now a fully accessible public bus service open to all. Tickets can be bought on board, cash or contactless, and key cards can be used on the service.

If you wish to use the Science Shuttle for University business travel, your department needs to open a corporate account with Oxford Bus Company and order key cards to travel on the service. These key cards can be used as pool cards to be borrowed as required or issued to individuals who travel frequently. The key card will be scanned each time it is used for travel and the department will only be charged for journeys travelled. Contact for more information.

For routes, pricing and timetables visit the Science Transit Shuttle website.

Begbroke shuttle

Begbroke Science Park offers a minibus service that is free of charge to all University members working at Begbroke Science Park, staff of tenant companies and visitors to site.

For minibus timetable and other information visit the Begbroke Science Park website

For meetings outside Oxford, why not catch a coach? It is certainly a more sustainable choice than going by train, plane or car.

  • There are two frequent 24-hour direct services between Oxford and London, the X90 and the Oxford Tube
  • For information on coaches from other major cities and airports, contact National Express
  • The central coach station is at Gloucester Green in the city centre
  • For international destinations, visit the Flixbus website

If you’re thinking of flying, think about whether it's possible to travel by train instead. You can get more work done en route and, if booked in advance, it can prove to be a cheaper option.

We recommend that staff travel by train when on business for:

  • journeys to and between destinations on the UK mainland
  • journeys between England and Paris, Brussels or other Eurostar destinations
