Closure of Sheepwash Bridge on Rodger Dudman Way: information for staff and students

Over the next few months, Network Rail will start work on replacing the Sheepwash Bridge on Rodger Dudman Way. This work supports the construction of a new platform at Oxford train station.

As part of this project, Little Pioneers Nursery and Preschool on Roger Dudman Way will be demolished to enable bridge work to commence. Preparation work on the building started Tuesday 7 May 2024.

Due to the increased level of work within the area, the footpath on the bridge will be closed, with pedestrians needing to walk in the carriageway instead.  Traffic management will be in place, with marshals in the area to ensure they can do this safety. Parking will also be suspended in the area.

While the nursery building is demolished, the towpath that runs under the bridge will also be closed, between Rewley Road and the footbridge at the northern end of Abbey Road. We understand that this may cause some inconvenience, but alternative routes are suggested below to navigate around the towpath closure.

Alternative routes (from city):

  • Under Botley Road rail bridge and up Roger Dudman Way (or up Abbey Road, over footbridge onto towpath, then take small footbridge to get onto Roger Dudman Way by Thames Wharf and Venniet Close buildings)

  • Through Jericho to Walton Well Road, over rail bridge towards Port Meadow and through car park past allotments to join Roger Dudman Way
