New scheme will let staff get on their bikes for less

The University is partnering with Green Commute Initiative (GCI) to offer employees the chance to pay for a new bike out of their pre-tax income. For most people, this will mean a saving of around a third, and in some cases, this could rise to almost a half. Find out how much you could save with GCI’s online calculator

You’ll be able to take advantage of the offer whether you’re a novice making your first tentative journeys on two wheels, or an experienced cyclist looking to take things to the next level with a better bike.

Government instructions to work from home where possible mean the scheme’s launch is now expected early next year. Current HMRC rules mean anyone taking part must commit to using their new bike for at least half their commuting journeys, so we are delaying the launch until more of us are commuting again or there is further clarity on these rules.

We will provide more details in the new year, but in the meantime, if you are thinking of buying a bike, it may be worth waiting until early 2022 so you can take advantage of the savings available.
