Be safe, Be seen

Improve your cycle skills

This covers basic bike handling skills for total beginners through to advanced skills for cycling in challenging traffic situations. Broken Spoke’s training is accredited to the national cycle proficiency standard Bikeability.

As a member of staff, you can book up to six hours of free training.

See … and be seen

When cycling in the dark, you must have white front and red rear lights as well as a red rear reflector. You can use flashing lights but if you are riding in areas without street lighting, it’s better to use a steady front lamp.

If you choose to wear a helmet make sure it fits correctly.  It’s also a good idea to wear light-coloured, fluorescent or reflective clothing or accessories that help other road users to see you in daylight and poor light.

There is more information in the Highway Code (Rules 59 and 60). It is also worth remembering that Thames Valley Police carry out regular spot checks in Oxford- you may be stopped if your bike doesn’t meet the standards.

cycle lights

You can buy a mini LED light set – one white, one red (on/off or flashing) plus 2 batteries – for the discounted price of £2.50 per set, from Security Services.

Visit their office between 7.45am and 3.45pm Monday to Friday at the Old Observatory off Hinshelwood Rd in the Science Area, and show your Bodleian Library or University card.
