Safety tips for motorists

If you hold a University parking permit, please remember: you're expected to follow the Highway Code at all times and show care for everyone on the road—especially those more vulnerable, like cyclists and pedestrians.

Here’s how you can help keep our roads safer:

  • Give space: When overtaking cyclists, leave at least 1.5 metres—about the width of a car. More space is needed at higher speeds.
  • Be patient: Cyclists may need to swerve to avoid potholes or drains. Wait for a safe moment to pass, and always check mirrors and blind spots before turning or opening your door.
  • Brake gently: Sudden stops can be dangerous for cyclists riding behind you.
  • Use the Dutch Reach: Open your car door with the hand furthest from it. This simple habit helps you spot cyclists before stepping out.
  • Two by two is ok: Cyclists are allowed to ride two abreast. It’s often safer—especially for children or less confident riders.
